Qiqong or Chí Kung is one of the therapies of Traditional Chinese Medicine, usual referred to as TCM. Qi stands for the Chinese concept of life energy, the energy which flows through all living things. You can feel this outside your body in nature, oceans, trees, plants, animals and within the body where the energy flows through the network of meridians; summarising: the life energy of the universum or cosmic energy. Qong means "art" or "skill". Therefore, Qiqong can be translated with "controlling and working with cosmic energy". Breathing is an essential aspect of Qigong. When breathing we not only take in essential oxygen, but also life bringing energy. In
the Chinese tradition controlling the life bringing energy has been developed in
different traditions and with different goals. Tradition shows that Qigong
was already an important aspect of Chinese medicine around 5000 years ago. Most
probably the earliest type of Qigong was some
sort of meditative dance, meant to create a good energy balance. Also various
excercises to heal and prevent illnesses existed. Taoïsm add and extra dimension
very much focused on spiritual growth. Later, influenced by Buddhism, Qiqong
was enlarged with meditation. Martial arts used Qigong to support their fighting
techniques. Until today many people practise Qiqong to acquire a clear
analytical mind.
Zhang Dai (11th. century) Qiqong has been used for thousands of years to improve mental and physical health. But for every serious practitioner of Qigong the truth is: practise, practise and practise. It is not a matter of course. Only regular and correct practise can give you good results. This practice offers Qigong with simple practical excercises which are directly focused on health. The relaxation sessions integrate Qigong excercises which support deep relaxation.
